Europeans completed a very good jumping season in Beijing
winning seven out of 12 possible medals in the four event categories.
Andrey Silnov (RUS) won the high jump at the Olympics and was also the
world leader with a 2.38m result.
Fellow Russian Yevgeniy Lukyanenko achieved what every pole vaulter
dreams of -- clearing 6.01m -- for hist first six metre jump in July
and only narrowly lost in Beijing to get the silver medal.
Louis Tsátoumas (GRE) had another good season, but failed to get the
desired result in the Olympic final and Europeans were left without a
medal in that event. In triple jump Nelson Évora (POR) grabbed his
second successive major championships title and won the Olympics with a
good 17.67m result, five centimetres ahead of Briton Phillips Idowu.
In the men's High Jump one great career came to an end with
32-year-old Swede Stefan Holm calling it a day at the end of the
