EEA 2009 year-end review: Men’s jumps

31-year-old Briton Phillips Idowu finally struck gold in major outdoor championships. The Olympic silver medallist set a 17.73 personal best to beat Olympic and world champion Nelson Évora of Portugal who took the silver with 17.55.

Edowu went on to win the prestigious European Athlete of the Year award.

In High Jump, Russian Ivan Ukhov was the strongest jumper in the world before the World Championships but he failed where it mattered most and it was countryman Yaroslav Rybakov who won the gold medal after a string of silver medals in the past.

In Pole Vault French Renaud Lavillenie became another member of the six metre club clearing 6.01 winning the inaugural SPAR European Team Championships in June. He fared well in Berlin too getting a bronze medal
